GARY, IND. (JANUARY 22, 2024) — The demand for adult basic education, English language learning,
child development associates, integrated education and skilled trades training is on the rise. To meet
the need, the Center of Workforce Innovations is opening two adult learning centers in Gary, Ind. To
mark the occasion, open houses are planned at both new locations on Friday, January 26, 2024.
The first open house and ribbon cutting ceremony is at WorkOne Gary, 504 Broadway, at 10:00 a.m.
The second is at Faith Community Center, 1351 W. 11th Ave., at 1:00 p.m. Both events will serve as
an opportunity to learn more, meet staff and tour new Gary Adult Learning Center locations.
WorkOne Gary is one of the new homes for adult education. Bridging the gap between adult
learning, employment services and workforce development has proven successful and can have
benefits for the individual, community and the region’s workforce.
“For a lot of people, life got in the way and they weren’t able to finish high school or gain a credential
that allows them to level up,” said Samantha Smith, Director of Adult Education for CWI. “Wherever
a person is on their career path, we are optimally located and well-equipped with resources to help
individuals facing barriers reach their goals.”
The second location is open to all adult learners but will offer specialized training for individuals
interested in pursuing careers in skilled trades. This site will offer career paths in construction,
carpentry, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and roofing. Students will receive hands-on, work-based
learning, plus opportunities to earn National Center for Construction Education and Research
(NCCER) certification.
“We are excited to partner with the Center of Workforce Innovations,” said Pastor Dennis Walton,
founder and CEO of Computer Skills & Training Center. “Together, we will help prepare more
Northwest Indiana residents for careers in the five main, in-demand building trades. We will offer
NCCER certification for those who complete their training here.”
