Recognition Showcases Samantha Smith’s Dedication to Community‑Centered Workforce and Adult Education
GARY, IN — Strengthening the connection between adult learning and workforce development, Samantha Smith, Center of Workforce Innovations’ Director of Adult Education, is now among a select group of individuals nationwide who have earned the Certified Workforce Development Professional (CWDP) credential from the National Association of Workforce Development Professionals. She received the national certification in December 2025.
The CWDP certification is a nationally recognized designation that demonstrates advanced knowledge and competency across employment and training systems, including program leadership, talent development, and community engagement. Smith earned the credential through a federally registered apprenticeship sponsored by CWI, allowing the organization to model workforce best practices while investing directly into its staff. It reflects a commitment to professional standards and continuous improvement within labor force development.
Smith brings more than a decade of experience to her current role at CWI. Before joining the organization, she served as Dean of Adult Education at Ogeechee Technical College in Georgia, where she began her career as a volunteer and helped expand access to community-based GED programs. Since joining CWI in 2023, she has led the Adult Literacy & Training Centers, supporting learners across Northwest Indiana and expanding offerings, including the new CDL Integrated Education and Training program, and overseeing a successful rebrand to Grad219 in 2025.
“Pursuing the CWDP certification was part of my ongoing commitment to building adult education programs that remove barriers and create opportunities for learners,” Smith said. “When adult education is aligned with workforce needs, it can open doors for individuals and families seeking long-term stability.”
CWI’s adult education programs provide critical support to learners seeking high school equivalency credentials, workforce skills and postsecondary opportunities throughout the Region.
