The Times of Northwest Indiana – 5/27/2026
National workforce development leaders will convene in Northwest Indiana for a major conference next week. Midwest Urban Strategies, the Center of Workforce Innovations and other partners in Northwest Indiana will host the 2026 Annual Convening, WorkforceWorks!! – The Urban Rural Connection from June 2 through June 4.
Employers, educators, policymakers and community organizations will participate in the three-day event that will include guided tours, presentations and site-based programs in Michigan City, Rensselaer and Gary.
“This event is designed to move beyond conversation and give workforce leaders the opportunity to experience what happens when workforce systems are connected to the needs of communities and employers,” said Tracey Carey, Executive Director of Midwest Urban Strategies. “Northwest Indiana is demonstrating how regional coordination and local leadership can create workforce strategies that serve both employers and job seekers.”
Attendees will learn about workforce training, redevelopment projects, apprenticeship programs, community-based initiatives and workforce development strategies.
“We wanted people to leave Northwest Indiana inspired by what’s possible when employers, educators, local leadership, and workforce organizations work together with intention,” said Lisa Daugherty, President and CEO of the Center of Workforce Innovations. “The work taking place across this region reflects years of collaboration, creativity and investment in building workforce systems that are responsive and connected to the needs of the community.”
The conference will kick off at the Elston Opportunity Hub in Michigan City, where attendees can hear from Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch and learn about the new workforce hub that connects residents to training, education, supportive services, and employment opportunities.
Attendees will visit St. Joseph’s College campus in Rensselaer on the second day and learn how the college is now focused on workforce education, including building and trades training, CDL instruction, apprenticeship pathways, and health and veterinary certifications.
The conference will conclude on the third day in Gary, where attendees will hear from Mayor Eddie Melton and learn about the Work B.I.G. Program, in which participants help with blight remediation and neighborhood revitalization.
